VOTING
RESTRICTIONS

Texas already has some of the most restrictive voting laws in the country. It was one of only six states to not open early mail in voting in 2020 despite a global pandemic. SB1 which was recently signed into law (currently being litigated) further tightens state election laws and limits counties from offering expanded voting options.

  • There is no online voter registration.

  • Voter registration must be done by mail or in person.

  • Overnight early voting hours and drive-through voting options have been banned which many Texans used during the pandemic.

  • It further limits mail in voting options, ballot drop boxes, and institutes stricter voter ID laws.

IMPACT ON
STUDENT VOTERS

SB 1- Texas' new voter suppression law disenfranchised students. First, mail-in ballot applications cannot be distributed; should local election officials send unsolicited applications they could face felony charges. Only Texans over the age of 65 who are out of the county on election day, are in jail but still eligible to vote, or those who can prove a disability/illness and cannot get to the polls are eligible to vote by mail. This is an insult to students, many of whom go outside of the county for their education.
